The Village of Maleme

Updated 15.03.2014

The village of Maleme is located a little more than
ten kilometres west of Chania. It is a typical Cretan
village that has centred on tourism and there is the
new village with all tourist services at the beach and
the old village with its residents up on the slope.

The beach in front of Maleme consists of small stones and is good for swimming. A little further out to sea the bottom changes to sand. The beach is exposed to winds like all other beaches on the north coast of Crete. There are many good taverns by the side of the beach road. There is also a grocery that local people use (CO-OP) and some supermarkets and a bakery. The village is good for those who wish for peace and rest.

Under the Second World War this airfield in Maleme was the main target for german airforce.
