Sfentoni (Zoniana) Cave
Sfentoni cave in the middle of Crete is certainly one of the most impressive and most interesting among Cretan caves. It is an especially good destination for families with children because they have invested very much to make the cave user-friendly and tempting. Guided tours, a 270 metres walk, partly you walk on footbridges, splendid lights and caves full of stalagmites and stalactites, it is an unforgettable experience. Guided tours many times mean that you need to wait for a while; you are not allowed to go into the cave on your own.
Tours start at the predestined times. Due to the guided tours the caves have been saved from vandalism. Easy to walk and safety are the qualities that makes the caves a good destination for families. On the other hand, everyone from the smallest to the biggest member of the family finds his own interesting world from the caves.
In the caves there lives many kinds of micro organisms, small insects, spiders, beetles, crustaceans, millipedes, snails and bats. The caves name “Sfentoni” comes from a Greek man, Sfentonis, legends tell different stories about him. In the picture there is one of the stalagmites and it is called the “Pisa Tower”.
