Arkadi
The Monastery of Arkadi
Arkadi Monastery has controlled the areas south-west of Rethymnon for centuries. The monastery, which is one of the most popular attractions on Crete, has been restored with European Union funding. The dramatic history of the monastery is well known by everyone on Crete. The monastery was the center of the resistance movement during the Turkish occupancy. Under siege the defenders chose to blow up the arsenal inside the monastery into which they had retreated, as surrendering wasn’t an option for the martyr fighters.
